If you’re unsure if you have rosacea or what it is, the first sign is usually ‘blushing’, where the face becomes flushed and red. This is predominately on the cheeks, nose and chin.
The blushing is caused by the capillaries of the skin (the small surface blood vessels) enlarging. With repeated episodes, these vessels may burst causing the redness to intensify and even exposing the skin to the risk of inflammation and infection.
It’s not known what causes rosacea, but we do know there are some factors that seem to trigger and increase the severity of the flushes. Things like alcohol, hot drinks, spicy foods, overexposure to sunlight, overheating or stress can bring on rosacea.
Many of these triggers are prevalent at the end of the year and while it’s possible to reduce the likelihood of rosacea flares by limiting your exposure, it’s not always fool proof.
So, what do you do if you have a flare up?
Handle with care
Avoid anything that is likely to overstimulate or irritate your skin – this includes products and tools, like makeup brushes.
While it might be tempting to try and ‘clear’ the symptoms, whether that be with creams, serums, or trying to cover redness with makeup, try and resist this urge. Although you may get some form of instant gratification, your skin is weakened and therefore susceptible to infection.
Also, anything with artificial colours and fragrances, synthetic or extremely active ingredients may inflame the skin more and cause further damage.
It’s best to think of your approach in more of a long-term plan, rather than a quick solution. As with your body, a more rounded and balanced approach to diet has a healthier and sustainable outcome in comparison to a crash diet.
