Enzymes & Acids: Next Level Exfoliation

Enzymes & Acids: Next Level Exfoliation

Today we are talking all about chemical exfoliants!

We already know what you’re thinking. ‘Surely chemicals aren’t natural or good for your skin!’ But you’d be surprised how gentle they can be on the skin in comparison to a physical exfoliant like a scrub.

If you’ve dabbled into the world of chemical exfoliation already, you may have come across these terms and are wondering how do I know which one is right for me? Never fear! Read on below as we break down each acid, where they come from and how they work.

BHA

Beta Hydroxy Acid works deep into your skin on a cellular level, by ‘ungluing’ the bonds of dead skin and sebum. This results in a deeper clean as the exfoliant can go deep into the pore rather than just address the surface level of dead skin. The most common form of BHA is Salicylic Acid which is naturally derived from willow bark. Being oil soluble, it’s able to penetrate deep into the follicles and breakdown the bonds of dry skin and sebum. Salicylic acid works best for acne prone skin, especially those with blackheads and whiteheads, it can also prevent future blemishes.

AHA

Alpha Hydroxy Acid on the other hand is water soluble, which means it works on a surface level to exfoliate dead skin. This acid also contains great hydrating factors so you can get the exfoliation without the dryness. There are many forms of AHA’s on the market so we’ve broken it all down for you!

Mandelic acid is derived from bitter almonds, this form of AHA molecule structure is what makes it gentler and penetrates more slowly. It promotes cell turn over and strengthens skin with continuous use. It’s great for those with sensitive skin or acne prone skin.

Glycolic Acid is derived from cane sugar, this AHA is fantastic not only exfoliation but reducing signs of pigmentation and fine lines. It’s great for those with normal, dull or mature skin types.

Lactic Acid is naturally derived from milk and can also be derived from fruit sources too. This form of gentle AHA is a great all-rounder. It helps improve the skin’s natural moisture factor, which makes it great for all skin types especially those who have dry or dehydrated skin.

ENZYMES

How is enzyme exfoliation different? Firstly, enzymes in skin care are made from fruit! Some of our favourites comes from berries, pumpkin and pineapple! An enzyme exfoliation is great for those with sensitive skin as they’re the gentlest form of chemical exfoliation. Enzymes will digest dead skin cells leaving you with a brighter complexion, so you can see that glow again! This type of exfoliation can benefit many skin concerns like acne, ageing and dry skin.

Exfoliation is for everyone and you should treat yourself to it at least once a week at home or at a salon! If you’re wondering if you can mix these types of ingredients, you absolutely can to see good results.
