Treating Pigmentation

Treating Pigmentation

Some common forms of pigmentation include freckles, sunspots, melasma and post inflammatory pigmentation.

Pigmentation can be difficult to shift as it depends on how deep within the skin it resides (surface level or on a dermal level) and how long it has been present.

We take a holistic approach when treating pigmentation - feeding the skin nutrients to strengthen skin cells and help prevent the cells from triggering melanin production, as well as encouraging skin cell renewal.

How does pigmentation occur?

Pigmentation occurs when excess melanin is deposited into the skin cell. This happens as a protective response to the skin experiencing stimulation or trauma. Melanin is a pigment that is the skin's response to help ‘harden’ the cell and make it more resilient.

The main triggers for pigmentation include sun exposure, hormonal changes (such as pregnancy) and trauma or inflammation (such as acne, dermatitis etc).

You may be more prone to pigmentation based on your environment, genetics, hormones and medical conditions or associated medications, but there are some things you can do to help balance your melanin production.

Top tips for pigmentation:

  • Increase your essential fatty acids – apply topically (see routine below) and take internally (such as supplements - you can visit your local health food store for the best suggestions.)
  • Reduce inflammation where possible
  • Protection from the sun - wear a large hat and apply SPF.
  • Gentle AHA and enzyme exfoliation will help regenerate skin cells and resurface pigmentation, while feeding the skin to strengthen cells.

Why are EFAs good for pigmentation?

Think of essential fatty acids (EFAs) as‘shock absorbers’ for your skin. They help heal and reline the membrane of the skin cell, making it more resilient to trauma.

A stronger, healthier skin cell can  help stop the spread of inflammation and is less likely to go into ‘protection’ mode, reducing the chances of melanin being deposited into the cell.

How long will it take to make a difference?

Your results depend on the type of pigmentation and how deep in the skin it is.

It is possible to reduce the appearance of some pigmentation by improving skin health and encouraging cellular turnover. We recommend allowing 4-6 weeks for skin cells to regenerate and for your skin health to improve. If the pigmentation is on a dermal level, it may not disappear, but you can help fade the appearance.
