Not all face oils are created equal

Not all face oils are created equal

At Skin Juice, we created our very first face oil when our range launched back in 1996. Back then, and still to this day, face oils are an integral part of our range and what we advocate as an alternative to using a night cream.

Since then, many companies have followed and created their own face oils to satisfy these oil cravings.

And while it’s great that many more people are embracing oils as part of their skincare routines, oils are better for the skin when they are pure, potent and effective.

Not all oils are created equal. Here are some tips to find the right oil for you:

Clean Oils

It’s important to look a little deeper at your face oil ingredient list.

Watch out for ingredients such as synthetic or mineral oils, artificial fillers, additives or synthetic fragrances. These unhealthy and cheap fillers won’t have the same affinity with the skin that natural oils have. Meaning they can coat, block or irritate your skin.

An all-natural and organic face oil will safely be digested by the skin and can help clear pores of excess sebum, as well as reducing inflammation and irritation.

Potency

This is where you will feel the difference. You may see face oils on the market at a cheaper price, however they may only have a few ingredients such as Rose Hip, Jojoba, Coconut or Almond oils. While these are all fantastic oils for the skin, they will only provide limited nutritional value for the skin.

Skin digestible nutrients

Look for face oils that are concentrated with a wide range of plant-based nutrient rich oils such as:

  • Moisturising essential fatty acid rich sea buckthorn and macadamia.
  • Antioxidant rich berry oils.
  • Vitamin enriched oils such as broccoli or tomato.
  • Age-defying oil-soluble natural actives such as commipheroline or padinami, which will help plump the skin and promote healthy collagen production.
  • Anti-inflammatory ingredients such as turmeric and bisabolol (a concentrated extract from chamomile), that will help to prevent redness and calm sensitivity.
The skin has tiny little pathways around the skin cells. These pathways contain the skin’s own lipids and will attract and accept these natural plant oils. Having a complex blend of different nutrient rich oils will satisfy the skin’s full dietary requirements.

Molecularly compatibile

Each plant oil has a different molecular size - some will be smaller, and others larger.

Oil from camellia is smaller in its molecular size and can penetrate deeply within the skin to deliver nourishment and skin nutrition for cell regeneration. While macadamia oil has a slightly larger molecule and will be retained in the skin’s outer layers to nourish and moisturise by strengthening the skin’s protective barrier.

This is another reason to look for face oils that offer a variety of ingredients.
