What is oily skin?
Oily skin types are prone to excessive sebum production from sebaceous glands. Sebum is an oily substance, which keeps your skin hydrated and waterproof by retaining the water in your skin. It can also act as a barrier in protecting your skin from environmental damage like bacteria. Sounds like sebum is a good thing, right? Unfortunately, too much of a good thing can be a problem. Regulating the levels of sebum is important and too much can lead to congestion resulting in blemishes.
What are some common myths about oily skin?
Regular cleansing keeps skin clear
Often people believe that if they cleanse their face often it will keep on top of excessive oil, but this can be rather counteractive. If skin is over cleansed and not replenished with a moisturiser your skin will end up over producing oil to make up for the loss of hydration. This can lead to further problematic skin resulting in more breakouts.
Oils will clog your pores
It’s fair to think if excessive oil is the issue then it’s smart to steer clear from them all together! But that isn’t the case. Facial oils are still important in delivering the skin vital nutrition, for oily or acne prone skin it’s smart to get to know the comedogenic scale for oils. This scale measures how likely oils will clog pores. For oily skin it’s best to look out for products that have a rating 2 and under which can include, squalane, apricot kernel oil, almond oil or blueberry seed oil!
You don’t need a moisturiser
The biggest myth we want to bust! All skin types need a moisturiser, the purpose of a moisturiser is to provide hydration, protection and deliver effective nutrients to help your skin to glow! Without a moisturiser your skin will try and make up for it by excessively producing more oil which can lead more blemishes!
